Department of Finance launches consultations on official development assistance contributions

Canada’s international assistance seeks to eradicate poverty and to build a more peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous world. Canada firmly believes that promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls is the most effective way to achieve this goal.
Today, the Department of Finance launched its 2020 consultations on development assistance, which seeks Canadians’ views on the international assistance contributions made by the Department of Finance and whether they meet the criteria stated under the Official Development Assistance Accountability Act.
In addition, the department would like to hear from Canadians about their views on the Report for Parliament on the Government of Canada’s International Assistance 2018-2019. The 2018-2019 International Assistance Report was the first time that all of Canada’s international assistance was presented in a single, consolidated international assistance report, and included reporting pursuant to the Bretton Woods and Related Agreements Act, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Agreement Act and the Official Development Assistance Accountability Act, in accordance with the Government of Canada’s Budget 2018 commitment.
Canadians are invited to review the consultation document and the backgrounder, and submit their input by December 23rd, 2020.

Official Development Assistance plays a critical role in supporting the people who are most in need around the world by funding the COVID-19 response to mitigate the impact of the virus, providing humanitarian assistance, reducing poverty, and promoting long-term peace and prosperity.

In 2019-20, the Department of Finance contributed a total of $533.4 million in Official Development Assistance to the International Development Association, the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The Official Development Assistance Accountability Act came into force in 2008. Its purpose is to ensure that Canadian Official Development Assistance is provided in a manner that:
- Contributes to poverty reduction;
- Takes into account the perspectives of the poor; and
- Is consistent with international human rights standards.

Every two years, under the Act, the Department of Finance is required to consult Canadians on its Official Development assistance contributions.
