Biographical Notes – Anne Whelan

Backgrounder

Ms. Anne Whelan was first appointed to the Bank of Canada’s Board of Directors in June 2018.

She is an entrepreneur, as well as principal shareholder and Chief Executive Officer of Seafair Capital, a growth-focused company with investments in community and behavioural health, wellness, and safety. In addition, Ms. Whelan is currently a director of CSA Group, Nova Leap Health, and The Gathering Place, as well as several startup companies.

Ms. Whelan has previously served as a director to the Business Development Bank of Canada, as board chair of Newfoundland Power, and as Regional Vice Chair for Newfoundland and Labrador to the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council.

Ms. Whelan has been nationally and regionally recognized for her business and community contributions. She was named one of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women in 2021 and in 2016 by Women’s Executive Network. In 2019, she was awarded the Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year Award. In 2017, she was named Startup Canada’s Entrepreneur of the Year for her outstanding contribution to Canadian entrepreneurship.

She is a certified corporate director (ICD.D), a graduate of the Rotman School of Management’s Directors Education Program, and holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
