Archived - Shares of point-of-sale transactions
As the charts show, in 1992 cash accounted for more than 80 per cent of the volume and about 50 per cent of the value of point-of-sale transactions. By 2012, however, the share of cash had dropped below 50 per cent in terms of volume and less than 20 per cent in value. Debit card payments, on the other hand, increased from about 1 or 2 per cent of both volume and value in 1992 to more than 30 per cent of volume and value in 2012. Credit card payments also increased during the same period, from about 15 per cent to more than 20 per cent of volume, and 45 per cent to more than 50 per cent of value.
