Domestic Supply Consultations

The Government of Canada is seeking input from Canadian producers and industry associations regarding their ability to produce a range of products that were subject to tariffs when imported .

Input to these consultations will be used to validate whether these products are made in Canada. If they are not made in Canada, the importers of these goods may be eligible for tariff relief.

Background

On March 4, 2025, the Government of Canada outlined a process and framework for how it will consider requests for tariff remission (i.e., tariff relief) on products imported from the U.S.

Remission of tariffs on U.S. imports are considered in the following instances:

  1. To address situations where goods used as inputs cannot be sourced domestically, either on a national or regional basis, or reasonably from non-U.S. sources.
  2. To address, on a case-by-case basis, other exceptional circumstances that could have severe adverse impacts on the Canadian economy.

A similar remission framework is also in place for tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from China, steel tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) and steel derivative surtaxes.

A key consideration in the government’s assessment of remission requests under these frameworks is whether the imported product can reasonably be sourced domestically.

Purpose of this Consultation

The Department of Finance Canada is consulting with Canadian producers to determine whether the products listed below can be sourced domestically.

If your company can produce any of the products listed in the table below, please indicate this by completing the web form.

If a Canadian supplier is identified, the company requesting tariff relief will be directed to contact that supplier in order to assess that their purchasing needs can be met (i.e., quantities, specifications, timelines).

This consultation is open until April 1, 2026 at 11:59pm PDT.

Additional supporting materials or questions can be sent to: remissions-remises@fin.gc.ca.

For ease of reference, the following categories of goods are covered by this consultation:

  • Aluminum
  • Steel
  • Fasteners
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)

List of Products for Consultation

Below is a detailed list of the products subject to consultation, including their HS code and physical description.

New:

For some products, the appropriate HS code remains to be determined (TBD). In those instances, two potential HS codes have been included for consideration. However, only the most appropriate HS code would be included in the Order for remission, if approved.
