Government of Canada announces appointments to the Competition Tribunal and the Specific Claims Tribunal

The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, is pleased to announce the following appointments:
The Honourable Jocelyn Gagné and the Honourable Michael L. Phelan, both judges of the Federal Court, are appointed as members of the Competition Tribunal.
The Honourable W. Lawrence Whalen, a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario, is appointed as a part-time member of the Specific Claims Tribunal.
Quick Facts
- The Competition Tribunal has jurisdiction to hear and dispose of all applications made under parts VII.1 and VIII of the Competition Act and any related matters. It is composed of up to six judicial members appointed from among the judges of the Federal Court and not more than eight lay members.
- The Specific Claims Tribunal is part of the federal government’s Justice at Last policy and joint initiative with the Assembly of First Nations aimed at accelerating the resolution of specific claims in order to provide justice for First Nations claimants and certainty for government, industry and all Canadians.
