July 15, 2024

Every quarter, the Western Sentinel recognizes 3rd Canadian Division members who have received medals, awards and commendations.

The following members were recognized by their units for actions that benefited their units, the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian people.

On March 19, Major Derek Kamen, Officer Commanding Real Property Operations Unit (West) (RPOU(W)) Detachment Wainwright, received the 3rd Canadian Division Support Group Command Team Commendation.

Maj Kaman assumed duties as Officer Commanding Detachment Wainwright in July 2021. Since that time, he exhibited extraordinary foresight, commitment and skill in implementing a multi‑year planning process for maintaining existing resources and building new infrastructure at 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton Detachment Wainwright. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the volume of projects being completed and the long‑term viability of myriad critical infrastructure to benefit 3rd Canadian Division Support Group, reflecting great credit upon RPOU(W).

On May 8, Lieutenant Timothy Cook was nominated for the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation for his exemplary work at Real Property Operations Detachment (RPOD) Cold Lake.

After commissioning from the ranks, Lt Cook was immediately tasked as the acting Officer Commanding (OC) of RPOD Cold Lake. Furthermore, upon arrival of the new OC, Lt Cook performed the duties of the Requirements Officer (RO) position, all prior to completing trades training. During his tenure as the RO, his leadership was instrumental in optimizing infrastructure maintenance. His efforts, which went above and beyond the expectations of his rank, led to recognizable improvements of 4 Wing’s infrastructure portfolio. Beyond Real Property Operation duties, for four years running, Lt Cook has achieved the Platinum standard on the FORCE Test.

Due to his outstanding performance, he was awarded the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation and he will be posted to Real Property Operations Unit (West) Detachment Moose Jaw this posting season as the OC.
