Chief of the Defence Staff pays visit to CFB Shilo

CFB Shilo had a special guest on Sept. 16 as Gen Jennie Carignan, Canada’s CDS, visited the base to meet with troops and examine the capabilities present on base.
Gen Carignan’s visit to CFB Shilo marked her third trip to 3rd Canadian Division since assuming the role of CDS in July 2024.
The visit served as a means for 3rd Canadian Division personnel to engage in greater detail with Gen Carignan through a series of formal briefings, operational updates, training observations and informal discussions.
A large part of the visit was a capability display at the Leslie Parade Square. There, Gen Carignan toured the various vehicles and weapons systems at CFB Shilo, and spoke with the crews responsible for the equipment about their respective platforms. The display served a dual purpose as a means of highlighting the improved and increased capabilities necessary for the continuing mission in Latvia.

Following the display, Gen Carignan toured the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery lines to meet with the unit’s soldiers.
Visits such as this are an excellent opportunity for CAF leadership to see first‑hand the work soldiers, aviators and sailors put in defend Canada and its allies. The visits also allow those same CAF members to speak directly with leadership about their ideas for the present and future of the military.
All told, Gen Carignan’s visit underscored the importance of maintaining operational readiness and fostering strong leadership connections across the Division as the CAF continues to serve Canadians at home and support its allies abroad.
