Strategic Joint Staff

What we do

The Strategic Joint Staff provides military analysis and advice to the Chief of the Defence Staff, allowing the Chief of the Defence Staff to lead the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) strategically.

Specific roles

The Strategic Joint Staff is organized into five divisions of expertise:

Operations

• provide analysis and strategic direction to the CAF
• oversee how federal security treaties and agreements are implemented and followed

Support

• balance CAF support between operational effectiveness and resource management

Plans

• develop contingencies and capacities to prepare for emerging military developments and governmental priorities

Strategic initiatives

• provide research on military topics
• provide leadership on emerging initiative

Coordination

• manage corporate and business integration for the organization
