Transcript

How do Muslims greet each other?

As-Salamu Alaykum. Peace be on you. Wa-Alaikum-Salaam. And upon you be peace.

Hello, I’m Padre Helms. I’m a military Chaplain with 30th Field here in Ottawa and I’m privileged to be introduced as the first female Muslim Chaplain in the CAF. I’m here to take the 60 seconds challenge.

What is Islamic Heritage Month?

It’s a special month of October that’s designated by the Canadian government since 2016 to highlight the contributions of Muslims to Canadian society.

What does being a spiritual leader in the CAF mean to you?

The privilege of journeying with members at special points in their life and the ability to uplift the service and sacrifice of members of the CAF past and present.

Is there a signature dish you enjoy for Islamic celebration days?

Anything sweet. Especially Baklava.

What is a takeaway you wish to share with fellow Muslims for this celebratory month?

It’s a really good time to share your rich cultural heritage. It’s a good time to make bridges with other people and to invite them into your rich and rewarding culture and it’s a time to be proud to be part of a Canada that has room for Canadian Muslims to be part of important, foundational institutions.

How can Defence Team members celebrate Islamic Heritage Month?

With open curiosity. Participate in some of the cultural experiences. I think also, get a chance to know Muslims and be a part of their world. Embrace the culture.
