(Shelley) As part of Operation LASER, the CAF response to help Canadians in the context of COVID-19, Canadian Armed Forces members are supporting civilian authorities in Quebec and Ontario.

We’re joined today by Aviator Chloé Vincent, a Medical Technician with 5 Field Ambulance working at one of the long-term care facilities in Quebec.

Thanks so much for joining us, Aviator Vincent. Can you describe your duties and involvement in this current operation?

(Avr Vincent) So currently I’m doing the evening shift. So for us, our daily task, we come in at 3pm. We usually go around our designated area, go see all the beneficiaries. We make sure they’re clean and don’t need to get changed or anything like that. Once that is done, we usually try to phone their family, try to do FaceTime, talk to them, just spend some time with them so they can talk to someone.

Around four-thirty, five (o’clock) usually dinner is served. So we bring them their meals, we help them to eat. Sometimes they cannot eat by themselves, so we feed them. Once that is done we clean everything, we make sure they’re well-hydrated. Depending on what they want and need.

(S) How have you been received by residents? What's the reaction been?

(Avr Vincent) I think it’s really positive the way they reacted to us. We always present ourselves as being military not PAB (prepose aux beneficiares/personal support worker) so they know that they’re going to have to be patient, we don’t know all their little quirks and what they like and what they dislike.

The first few days was an adaptation for them and for us, but they welcomed us with open arms, they were really glad to see us. Glad to see some more people coming to help. That is really nice for us to see, that we were appreciated and they were happy to see us. And now, as we get to know them, we know what are their likes, dislikes, so that it became that much easier and they are much more satisfied with what we do for them, just because we know them better now.

(S) Thank you so much for joining us today.

Have you completed the COVID-19 Defence Team Survey?

If you haven’t, please take the time as this survey will assess the impacts and needs of all Canadian Armed Forces and Defence civilians and their families during the pandemic.

Your feedback is anonymous, confidential and will help the Department to better understand your experiences.

Furthermore, this survey will help identify how we can improve our policies, programs and services as we all work together through this challenging time.

The Survey link is available in the related links, on the HR Go App and CAF App. It can also be found in the email you received from your L1 or L2 encouraging you to participate.
