(Shelley) With millions of Canadians impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces have joined the Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign in an emergency campaign in support of the immediate needs faced by United Way Canada and HealthPartners.

Today, I’m joined by campaign Champion and Commander of the Canadian Army, Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre, to speak more about how we can offer support and comfort to the most vulnerable in our communities.

(S) Thanks so much for joining us today, sir. Right from the start, what is the National Defence COVID-19 Emergency Charity Campaign?

(LGen Eyre) Firstly, we’ve seen Canadians right across the country effected by this pandemic. Businesses have closed, people are out of work, many are ill, unfortunately many have died. The Canadian Armed Forces, supported by the Defence Team, is very active in supporting Canadians across the country. Whether it be in long-term care facilities, whether it be supporting our Northern communities or supporting the Public Health Agency of Canada. So we are involved.

This is another way for us to support Canada and Canadians in this time of need. So the COVID-19 Emergency Campaign is under the NDWCC (National Defence Workplace Charitable Campaign) and it’s really focused on two funds, United Way and our HealthPartners.

(S) How does it feel to champion such an important effort during this unprecedented time?

(LGen Eyre) I am both humbled and proud to be able to lead this effort. Wearing this uniform, serving in the Canadian (Armed) Forces or part of the Defence Team, it’s all about service to Canada. And this is just another way to give back to our communities. A very important way in this time of need.

(S) How can Defence Team members donate?

(LGen Eyre) Donating is easy. Go to the National Defence COVID-19 Emergency Charity Campaign website on the Canada.ca site and select the “Give Now” button and it’s very self-explanatory from there. Now remember, this campaign goes until June the 20th so time is starting to get short. If you’re donating to the United Way fund, please ensure that you mark what department you’re coming from and indicate what Level-One (L1) you belong to because this will all be tracked as part of our wider National Defence (Workplace) Charitable Campaign in the fall.

(S) What are the funds that donations are going to?

(LGen Eyre) This campaign supports two amazing funds. Firstly, there’s the United Way Local Love in a Global Crisis fund that directly supports those in need in a local community. And it’s tied to postal codes, so you’re assured that your funds will support those in the local community. Secondly, there’s the HealthPartners “Help our Helpers” fund that really supports those on the frontlines of this pandemic and their urgent work to protect those who are most vulnerable in our society. And once again, both of these wonderful charities are an excellent way for our members to give back to their communities and don’t forget this only goes on until the twentieth of June.

(S) Thank you so much for joing us today, sir.

(LGen Eyre) No, thank you. And remember, together we can make a difference!
