Hi, I'm Captain Heather Sutherland and I'm here in Greece on Exercise RAMSTEIN FLAG 24.
The main objectives of RAMSTEIN FLAG 24 are working together with the NATO member states. We're focusing on mission planning, executing a mission together, debriefing, and also practicing our air interoperability so we're ready to execute a mission.
It's a lot of learning about what everyone is able to bring to the table.
We have the tanker crew which flies sorties twice a day - an AM and PM wave - and they are refueling a whole bunch of other jets: the French, the Greek, Italian. I am one of the Tanker Liaison Officers. I am working with the mission planners and then taking that information back and forth between the tanker crew and the mission planners to make sure that capabilities are being met, fuel loads are being met, we know exactly what is required for the exercise and the mission that's currently being run, and that we are able to uphold our commitments. I know the mission set, I know the fuel loads, I know the capabilities of our tankers, and I just need to be able to match that with the receivers from other countries.
This exercise is definitely preparing us for interoperability with our NATO nation states. We have learned a lot about the different capabilities of the other air forces, their likes and dislikes when it comes to refueling, the capabilities of their fighters. By training together today, we are preventing confusion in the future.
