(JT) Hello. For National Public Service Week 2021, I would like to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to the more than 24,000 public servants who work here at the Department of National Defence. All of you, along with our more than 100 000 CAF colleagues, have been the backbone of Canada during this past year and a half of COVID.
I am so proud to be the Deputy Minister of this department. I am so proud of the work that you have done. So much has gone on in the past year, in particular, inside and outside our department. And through significant challenges, you all continue to deliver programs, policies, services that are complex, difficult and very real. And you have continued to inspire me with your dedication to the Defence team. We will work with you to solve those very real challenges and I rely on you to help guide me, as we work through what's ahead.
In the meantime, I ask that you celebrate yourselves, this Public Service Week. If there were any year to do it, it is this one. My appreciation for you... I don't have the words for it, other than: Thank you, celebrate yourselves and be proud of what you have done for this department and this country this last year.
(NC) Thank you, Deputy. Joyeuse Semaine nationale de la fonction publique 2021. C'est ma première avec vous, mais saviez-vous que c'est la trentième fois que les Canadiens eux-mêmes célèbrent l'excellence des services que nous leur rendons? [English: Happy National Public Service Week 2021. This is my first with you, but did you know that it’s the 30th time that Canadians have celebrated the excellent services that we provide?]
And what a year to do just that! I want to express all my appreciation, and my admiration for the work you do, and my pride of being part of this team. This is not an ordinary public service. We are internationally acclaimed, and this is not an ordinary team. In the last year, together with the Canadian Armed Forces, you rose to the challenge of assisting Canadians, and the world, under extraordinary conditions.
[English: Whatever your role and personal circumstances, you have given help and hope, and you have held Canadian values high. A team’s value is also measured in difficult times. I want to salute your courage in putting a face to our organizational challenges and a name to the practices we must eliminate and those we must preserve.]
We are certainly not alone in having to rewrite the rules of living together, our "vivre ensemble". But we will be the ones who pave the way to a truly inclusive Defence team. For your courage, I say thank you. Pause, reflect, and celebrate. Happy National Public Service Week.
