Hi, I’m Brigadier General Scott Malcolm, Canadian Armed Forces Surgeon General.

I’m extremely proud of the meaningful contributions that our members make to peace, security, and humanitarian efforts, both at home and abroad.

While CAF service is extraordinarily rewarding, there are times when one must make sacrifices. For example, this could include taking a posting to a location far away from friends and family or deploying for an extended period to a hostile location. Not surprisingly, these sacrifices can be a significant source of stress for many of us.

As the Surgeon General, I’m passionate about the health and well-being of all CAF members and ensuring that anyone who may be struggling is able to get the help they need. It’s important that you know that there are a variety of ways that you can access mental health care. The CAF has confidential, virtual and in-person mental health professionals available, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and mental health nurses who can be accessed regardless of where you serve. Appointments can be made by contacting your Health Services Centre. As well, the Canadian Forces Member Assistance Program has mental health support and crisis services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The CAF also offers an Addictions Treatment Program, Chaplaincy services, a Family Information Line, and an Operational Stress Injury Support Program. As well, anyone who is thinking about suicide can call or text 9-8-8 for immediate bilingual suicide prevention help. This number works anywhere in Canada.

Defence Team public servant employees, I encourage you to contact the Employee Assistance Program if you or your family members are struggling. Free, short-term counselling services are available in person, over the telephone, or online to help you with personal, family, or work-related concerns.

In closing, remember, there is no health without mental health. If you’re struggling, make your mental health a priority. Reach out and get the help you need. We’re here for you.
