(Andrew McKelvey) Hello Defence Team members and welcome back to Day 2 of the 2020 Virtual Celebrating Excellence Awards.

I am honoured like to present the second award of this year’s Celebrating Excellence Awards … the DM/CDS Team Impact Award.

This award recognizes individuals or teams who distinguish themselves by making a substantial contribution to the Defence Team in the areas of people management, diversity and inclusion, and total health and wellness.

This year there are 11 recipients of the DM/CDS Team Impact Award and the winners are:

Joanna Calder

Awarded to: Joanna Calder

Citation: Commended for her outstanding service and a lifetime of dedication to the Department of National Defence and for establishing the social media presence and the corporate identity of the RCAF.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: Joanna, thank you for your dedicated service as a Reservist and Public Servant over 43 years! You accomplished so much and made so many contributions to the RCAF, DND, and the Public Affairs community. Congratulations from your RCAF PA family!

CWO Maurice Chapman

Awarded to: CWO Maurice Chapman

Citation: Commended for his dedication to the Canadian Cadet organizations, his mentoring at the national level, and for helping to establish a legacy of health and safety standards for Canada’s largest youth program.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: Congratulations, CWO Maurice Chapman, on being selected for the Celebrating Excellence Award. Through your tireless dedication and expertise, you have enhanced the health and wellness of thousands of cadets in B.C., and throughout Canada, navigating the Cadet Organizations through complex situations and setting an example for policy across the country. The impact of your influence will be felt for many years to come and we thank you for your ongoing contributions to the medical community, the Cadet Organizations, and the Canadian Armed Forces. Johanne Frawley

Awarded to: Johanne Frawley

Citation: Commended for her efforts to promote, improve, and inspire the use of both official languages, making her a leader in creating an inclusive Royal Canadian Navy.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: Johanne, congratulations on receiving this prestigious award. As the RCN Command Coordinator of Official Languages, you combine extraordinary dedication and determination with astounding job knowledge to achieve exceptional results. Routinely going above and beyond to advance the RCN’s language programmes, your empathetic leadership style has been named by many RCN members as the key contributing factor to their second language training success. Your work in overseeing RCN official language policy, translation services and your tireless support of training is truly remarkable. Bravo Zulu.

Mario LaRoche

Awarded to: Mario LaRoche

Citation: Commended for his commitment as head of the Translation Services Unit in overseeing the final editing and translating of communications products for over 25,000 employees of ADM(HR-Civ).

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: Congratulations Mario for the Celebrating Excellence Award! Mario’s attention to the growing needs for quality language services across the organisation over the years and his passion to constantly provide nothing but the best client service drove him to build HR-Civ’s translation team from the ground up into an outstanding client-focused service. He is a shining example of overcoming adversity to deliver exceptional service while collaborating and building relationships with peers and colleagues across the organisation. His attention to detail ensures information is communicated equally in both languages to the DT with the highest quality. Thank you Mario!

Ralph Prentice

Awarded to: Ralph Prentice

Citation: Commended for his contributions to the professional foundation on which much of the Royal Canadian Navy’s resource management practices and successes are built.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: Congratulations Ralph! Your outstanding efforts, with your knowledge and skill, have allowed the RCN to have the most comprehensive Business Plan in the Department. Thanks for everything you do and the leadership & mentorship that you have shown. In addition to Business Planning, it is only through your unwavering drive and determination in the field of analytics that the RCN has become the Vanguard in the use of data analysis for Enterprise Management. It is going to be very exciting to watch where you will take us next!

Charles Sewell

Awarded to: Charles Sewell

Citation: Commended for his volunteer efforts, knowledge and passion as an elder on the Defence Aboriginal Awareness Group of Canadian Forces Base Gagetown and for his involvement in increasing inclusiveness in the workplace.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: It is my distinct honour to recognize the significant achievement made by Mr. Charles Sewell in being awarded the 2020 Celebrating Excellence Award for his years of dedication and service to the 5 Canadian Division Support Base – Gagetown Defence Aboriginal Awareness Group. His efforts, passion, and knowledge as an elder and advisor to the chain of command has served to strengthen our relationships with local Indigenous communities. Mr. Sewell has directly contributed to a positive workplace environment and has enriched the lives of defence team members within the 5th Canadian Division.

Awarded to: Heather Walsh

Citation: Commended for her sustained contribution to the Department in ensuring that external audits and reviews are conducted efficiently and that the resulting reports are as fair and as accurate as possible.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: Congratulations to Heather Walsh for receiving a Celebrating Excellence Award! Heather is an exemplary contributor to DND particularly in the role of Liaison for the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) since 2009. As such, she has been responsible to manage the coordination of external departmental audits and reviews conducted by the OAG and other external review agencies. Heather is a consummate professional who highly deserves to be recognized for over a decade of excellent service to the External Liaison function. Citation: Commended for working hard to promote diversity and inclusion by staging a successful, inspirational event on March 8, 2019, to mark International Women’s Day.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: Lieutenant-Commander Deanna Wilson and Major Candice Thompson are highly deserving of this award for envisioning and executing a first-of-its-kind International Women's Day event at CFB Borden. The event garnered international recognition and brought together and inspired over 850 members of the Defence Team and local community to celebrate Canada's diversity while promoting an inclusive workplace. These two Officers bring great credit to the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces for their devotion to equality and inclusion and fostering strong interdepartmental and community relationships. Bravo Zulu!!!

Citation: Commended for the introduction of the Departmental Wellness and Well-being survey to the Defence Team, an effort that set a new research standard across the Department and to other government departments.

Virtual “Shout-out” from the Nominator: I am pleased to recognize the Director General Military Personnel Research and Analysis team for developing the Defence Wellness and Well-Being Survey (DWWS). This was an unprecedented, ground breaking and modern survey, geared towards attracting participation, and leveraging the changed demographics of DND and the CAF. The result of cutting edge research, the survey generated useful data which can be used to reinforce the tenets of Strong, Secure, Engaged (SSE), and is a core element of the Total Health and Wellness strategy. The meaningful data obtained by the DWWS will guide the future development of programs and tools that help leaders and Defence Team members support health and wellness in the workplace, and thereby inform future programs and activities to support workplace well-being. DGMPRA’s excellent work, coupled with insight, collaboration, analysis and foresight have positioned DND and the CAF to be leaders within the Canadian Government as a whole and with our Allies.
