DM/CDS message on the COVID Alert App
September 2, 2020 - Defence Stories
As Defence Team members, our default setting is to act. As we head into fall within the new COVID-19 environment, our collective action to prevent a resurgence will be especially significant.
One of many tangible actions we can take is to download the Government of Canada’s new COVID Alert app onto our devices—either personal or work-issued device. Both of us strongly encourage you to do so.
We understand that many of you have privacy or security concerns. Our teammates at ADM(IM), ADM(DIA) and Director Access to Information and Privacy have tested the app and have no concerns. The app uses Bluetooth to exchange random codes with nearby phones that also have the app installed, and it never shares any data that would identify an individual, their personal information, or the location where a potential exposure occurred.
You can read more about the app in the information provided at the bottom of this message. While use of the app is voluntary, for the sake of your continued health and safety we strongly encourage you and your friends and families, to download and use the app. By using the app as one of many risk mitigation measures, we can be a tremendous force for good.
Thank you for your continued hard work and diligence. We are enormously proud to lead this Defence Team.
Gen Jonathan Vance
Chief of the Defence Staff
