March 5: Twitter Update from the Deputy Minister Jody Thomas

March 9, 2021 – Defence Stories

Friday Update: #IWD2021 is Monday. It’s a reminder that we need to celebrate the phenomenal women in this #DefenceTeam, and all that they accomplish and contribute to Canadians’ safety and security. Not just one day, but every day.

Let’s also be real about what women face in the course of doing their jobs. Women aren’t all the same and neither are their challenges. We need to amplify all women’s voices, so that their different realities are heard, acknowledged and understood.

Yesterday, 800 women across the Defence and Security sector participated in an honest and inspiring virtual event celebrating women, excellence and community. Shoutout to the @WiDS_Canada team for all their efforts to build this remarkable event despite COVID.

We have updated direction for those opting to get the COVID vaccine when your opportunity arrives: you’re not required to take formal leave for your vaccine appointment. You can treat the time as you would a normal medical appointment.

We are all challenged by COVID, yet none of us can know what our colleagues are dealing with unless we ask. Please keep reaching out to one another. Showing empathy and checking-in has enormous impact, especially to those working remotely.

Starting 9 March, Janice Charette will serve as Interim Clerk of PCO while Ian Shugart undergoes medical treatment. Both are remarkable, kind and inspiring people. Canada’s Public Service is so fortunate to have their leadership.
