Civilian Employees: Knowing Your Position
March 30, 2021 - Defence Stories
You have the right to understand the work you’re asked to do and how your role fits in the bigger picture of the organization.
You can request the following documents that are related to your position:
- Job description: describes the nature of the work, such as skills, responsibilities, work environment and effort required to do the job. You’re encouraged to understand how it applies to you and discuss any concerns with your manager.
- Rationale: explains how your job was evaluated for each of the factors or elements that correspond to your occupational group using the appropriate evaluation tool. This evaluation results in a classification decision, which determines your group and level.
- Organizational chart: graphically represents the positions and lines of authority within your organization.
Some organizational structures are “flat,” which means that everyone reports to the same person. This structure offers maximum flexibility in environments that are project driven. Some organizational structures are depicted as a “matrix.” These structures typically blend project teams with more functional structures. Other structures are represented by a traditional hierarchy. These organizations have the least amount of agility and do not require frequent changes to reporting relationships.
- Expanded position action report (EPAR): overview of the position includes the position number, title, classification, security level, and official language, etc. It reflects the latest updates to your position.
You can request these documents from your manager, an agent at HR Connect RH (1-833-747-6363), or from E-Class. If your position is mapped to a standardized job description (SJD) (accessible only on the National Defence network), you can look it up in the SJD Job Library (accessible only on the National Defence network).
For more information, visit the E-Class portal (accessible only on the National Defence network) or contact E-Class.
