The Return to Work Program Transitions to HR-Civ’s Office of Disability Management (ODM)

September 14, 2021 - Defence Stories

DND continues to prioritize Defence Team member’s health, safety and well-being, and is committed to building a safe and inclusive work environment. We have strong programs, preventative measures, and systems in place to support our employees.

When injury, illness or impairment does occur, we work together and take action to support our employees. To simplify processes and to provide a centralized approach to disability management, the Return to Work (RTW) program transitioned from VCDS D Safe G to HR-Civ’s Office of Disability Management (ODM) (accessible only on the National Defence network), effective September 15, 2021. This transition is a positive step toward continued support to the Defence Team and aligns with the Total Health and Wellness Strategy.

The ODM is now responsible for all aspects of disability management - from the onset of illness, injury or impairment up to and including recovery support, return to work (RTW), medical accommodation, and medical retirement. Impartial support is available for both occupational and non-occupational illness, injury and impairment. This centralized approach will simplify and improve disability management services to employees and their managers and allow GSOs to focus on the General Safety Program, prevention and ergonomics.

The ODM employs experts in the field of disability management, and provides personalized services that will allow our employees to stay at work or return to work, as early as medically feasible. As a leader in their field the ODM is best positioned to support the complex disability management and RTW needs of DND employees. ODM continues to expand their services to provide support the Defence Team across Canada.  Throughout this expansion the ODM will be lending their expertise and supporting return to work in locations that are not yet full serviced by the ODM.

As we slowly return to a post-pandemic workforce, we understand this can be a difficult time and we want to provide the necessary support for all individuals. Through this approach we can provide an inclusive and safe work environment, while respectfully accommodating individuals with disabilities.

For inquiries or concerns, please contact the ODM (accessible only on the National Defence network) or check out the updated ODM Information card (accessible only on the National Defence network) for more information.
