Transgender Day of Remembrance: A time to reflect
November 19, 2021 - Defence Stories
Tomorrow, the Defence Team reflects upon those lives lost to transphobic violence. For those who don’t yet know the historical significance of this day, Transgender Day of Remembrance began as a candlelight vigil to honour Rita Hester—a trans woman who was killed in 1998. Sadly, her murder has not been solved. Now, November 20 stands as day to recognize victims of transphobic violence.
Defence Team members are encouraged to attend candlelight vigils and learning events related to Transgender Day of Remembrance. Want to learn more about how to be a better ally, but not sure where to start? The Positive Space Initiative: LGBTQ2+ Awareness course can help you on your journey.
We also recognize that tomorrow may be difficult for many. If you would like to speak with someone, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to all Defence Team members and their immediate family 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The toll-free number for EAP is: 1-800-268-7708 and the TTY (for people with hearing impairments) is: 1-800-567-5803. You may also find mental health services (accessible only on the National Defence network) available on the Intranet site.
