Managers: Death in Service
May 10, 2022 - Defence Stories
In the tragic event that there is a death in service, the compensation team is here to support managers and the next of kin. Dealing with a death in service is never easy and we are hoping this information helps guide you through the process.
In order to process a death in service for a civilian employee at DND, the section 34 manager must submit a Pay Action Request (PAR) through the Human Resource Services and Support (HRSS) (accessible only on the National Defence network) as soon as possible.
The information required to submit the PAR for a death in service is:
- Work type – Termination
- Sub type – Death in Service
- Effective start date of event/pay action – date of death
- Comments – Provide the name and contact information for the point of contact (i.e. employee’s spouse, next-of-kin, legal representative, etc.)
- The Death Certificate, if available, can be added as an attachment.
These PAR’s will be identified by the compensation team as a top priority and will be escalated to a dedicated DND compensation advisor that will ensure the family is contacted and supported in a timely manner.
