One-stop site for conduct and culture training and education resources

May 19, 2023 - Defence Stories

Want to be part of the efforts of the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to create a better workplace but not sure where to start? A new training and education resource site has you covered.

The Conduct and Culture Training and Education Resources web page brings together courses and educational resources that are related to, and aim to advance, creating healthy work environments. The web page provides links to free courses and training materials that are open to all Defence Team members (you may need to set up an account to access some sites, such as the Defence Learning Network 3.0). The offerings range from in-person and virtual classes to self-study courses and materials.

The user-friendly, accessible and interactive design of the web page allows you to filter courses according to the category you are interested in (such as diversity and inclusion, conflict management, wellness and mental health). The search bar helps you refine your search further by entering your role (employee, supervisor, manager or executive), or keywords (such as "stress management").

For each selection, you will find a quick overview of the course or resource, some tags to describe how it's structured, and the link to access the course or resource. The organizations delivering the various programs include the Canada School of Public Service, the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion.

The site was developed by the Director General Professional Conduct Development (DGPCD) team within the Chief Professional Conduct and Culture (CPCC) unit. The aim is to create a vibrant community of practice working towards personal development and growth. The site also addresses the consideration in Recommendation #24 within the Report of the Independent External Comprehensive Review to make training on "soft skills" such as interpersonal, problem-solving and conflict management skills more easily available to CAF members to help them communicate better around difficult issues (like sexual assault and misconduct).

It's important to note that DND/CAF courses remain under the authority of the appropriate Level 1 Authority. For example, the Chief Military Personnel is the functional authority for military personnel management including, but not limited to, individual training and education and (common) professional development. For more detailed information on courses available to DND employees and military managers, or supervisors of civilian employees, you are invited to consult the Defence Learning Catalogue (DWAN only) and/or email any enquiries on mandatory training to: P-OTG.LearningGovern@intern.mil.ca (DWAN only).

As the functional Centre of Expertise for Conduct and Culture Training and Education, DGPCD hopes to grow the site and is actively working to expand the depth of choices listed with the latest courses and resources. They encourage everyone to interact with them by providing suggestions and feedback to their email address (CPCCTraining-EntrainementCCPC@forces.gc.ca) to help them keep the list of available training current, comprehensive and diverse.

Creating a positive and supportive work environment is a team effort. But it's the knowledge and skills that each individual member of the team contributes that guarantees success.
