You could be eligible to get your legal fees reimbursed if you have experienced military sexual misconduct
May 15, 2023 - Defence Stories
The Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre (SMSRC), formerly known as the Sexual Misconduct Response Centre (SMRC), is now reimbursing members of the Defence Team who have paid or are paying for legal expenses as a result of experiencing military sexual misconduct, as part of its new Independent Legal Assistance (ILA) program.
What is the Independent Legal Assistance (ILA) program?
The ILA program includes legal information, advice and representation relating to the military and criminal justice systems, for individuals who have experienced military sexual misconduct, to help them make informed decisions based on their needs and particular situation.
What is available for you?
You can request a reimbursement for eligible legal expenses as a result of an incident(s) of military sexual misconduct. This includes legal information, advice, and/or representation related to the military or criminal justice systems. Reimbursements are available for eligible legal expenses incurred on or after 1 April 2019.
How to apply?
Individuals may call the SMSRC’s 24/7 line at 1-844-750-1648 to speak with a counsellor about this initiative, and be referred to the program. People who have experienced military sexual misconduct can also contact us to see if they would be eligible for reimbursement. Information is also available on the SMSRC ILA program webpage.
