Message from the Clerk of the Privy Council on the terrorist attack in Israel

October 13, 2023 - Defence Stories

Privy Council Office

Dear Colleagues,

On Saturday morning, Canadians across the country were horrified to learn of the gruesome terrorist attacks launched by Hamas against Israel, and shocked by the terrible loss of life that occurred. I join those around the world in unequivocally condemning these inhumane acts and in supporting Jewish people. I offer my sincere condolences for all of the innocent lives lost.

In addition to the senseless loss of life, there have been disturbing celebrations of violence and acts of antisemitism across the world, including in Canada. Arab and Muslim communities are also fearing increased hate and discrimination due to a rise in Islamophobia. We cannot stay silent. Together we must stand united against all forms of discrimination.

We will continue to be vigilant in our commitment to ensuring that all public servants feel safe in their work environments. We believe in empathy and creating an atmosphere of understanding and mutual respect. We condemn any behaviour or expression of hate in the workplace regarding the individual identities of others.

These events are deeply painful and personal. The safety and wellbeing of public servants is a priority. If you need support, the Employee Assistance Program (accessible only on the National Defence network) is available to all employees 24/7. You may request a culturally specific counsellor.

You can find information about Canada’s response to the crisis in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on Global Affairs Canada’s dedicated webpage, which includes emergency contact information for Canadians in the regions affected.

Now is the time to show our support and solidarity for family members, friends, and colleagues across the Public Service who have been impacted by this tragedy.

John Hannaford (he/him)
Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet
