In late summer 2023, the modernized and updated Commander Canadian Army Reading List was released. The new reading list offers eBooks and many audiobooks, appropriate for every rank level. Titles are easily accessible through the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Virtual Library or your local library.

In an ever-changing world with increasingly complex operational environments, all members of the CAF benefit from our ability to effectively resolve difficult problems. We can sharpen these problem-solving skills by expanding our knowledge base and exploring new ideas. The Commander Canadian Army Reading List was curated to appeal to a wide variety of interests, including fiction and non-fiction.

At each rank level, the list includes one title for each category of: Foundation, History, Useful Fiction, Emerging Ideas, and Human Dimension. Each category aims to develop a specific dimension of professional development, and to provoke thoughtful discourse. These books can help you think about ideas that may impact the future of warfare, or to reflect on the human aspects of being a soldier and leader.

All members of the Defence Team can sign up for CAF Virtual Library access by completing a simple form. Once registered, you can take eBooks and audiobooks with you wherever you go with the Libby app. Listen to an audiobook while you commute or while you exercise!

To prepare for the future, all soldiers can benefit from past experience, current experts, and informed speculation on the future of conflict. This enables us to mentally prepare for future challenges.

We want to hear from you! Line of Sight, the Canadian Army’s professional military education hub, hosts the Commander Canadian Army Reading List and welcomes book reviews (from the reading list or otherwise) and articles from both academia and the field force. Please consult Line of Sight submission guidelines to join in the conversation.
