Said Captain Vortisch, a Construction Engineer from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who recently served as part of Operation (Op) UNIFIER, “It feels amazing to be part of something beyond ourselves; knowing that the long hours being put in can affect the outcome and future of the Ukrainians.” Operation UNIFIER is the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) military training and capacity building mission in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Vortisch was employed in the role of Task Force Engineer for her area of the operation during Rotation 16, promoting and supporting good environmental stewardship, overseeing health and safety matters, taking care of contracts and infrastructure matters, as well as serving as the Adjutant for her region. As the Adjutant she was responsible for overseeing the recognition of members, hospitality requests, group departures, and representing her team during interactions with accommodations staff.
She had a lot on her plate during her deployment, but hard work is nothing new for Captain Vortisch, a member of International Military Sports Council (CISM) women’s volleyball team, and captain of the women’s base golf team at Canadian Forces Base Halifax. “I like to try and keep a positive attitude. Meeting new people and establishing a good working relationship only helps our cause and makes working better,” she said.
Captain Vortisch was proud of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) work and those of partner nations to support the training needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during her time deployed on Op UNIFIER. She credits her CAF service with giving her the tools to think critically and make timely decisions, but notes hard work is essential. She encourages her peers to “be comfortable with being uncomfortable when work needs to be done,” but she always remembers to keep an optimistic outlook and encourage enthusiasm with her colleagues.
