Chaplains from the 4th Canadian Division (4 Cdn Div), Canadian Joint Operations Command, Canadian Special Operations Forces Command and the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre gathered at Canadian Forces Base Kingston, Ontario for Exercise RESILIENT SPIRIT. From October 30 to November 2 they were met by senior leadership from across the Royal Canadian Chaplain Service (RCChS). It was a lively time of encouragement, spiritual development and work which echoes the chaplain calling.

Participants engaged virtually with the 4 Cdn Div Command Team; Brigadier-General Josh Major and Chief Warrant Officer Jeramie Leamon. Both highlighted the importance of their priorities for the Division - readiness, culture and safety all within a reconstitution framework.

The team was also met by Chaplain General, Brigadier-General Guy Belisle, who offered heartening words regarding the state of chaplaincy. “Cultural evolution is progressing, and it is wonderful to see the RCChS leading the way on so many fronts. The chaplaincy is strong. It is the only trade that is green in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).” Green indicating that recruiting into the trade is meeting the needs of the chaplaincy. The Chaplain General was encouraged by his travels through the country, where commanding officers continue to ask for greater chaplain presence on their teams.

Chief Warrant Officer Tracey Graham warmly greeted the chaplains by saying, “I am the luckiest chief in the CAF.” Her passion and commitment to the chaplaincy was inspiring and her presence was a lasting encouragement to the chaplains.

The Chaplain of the Canadian Army, LCol Richard Larsen, expressed how significantly the CAF will be increasing its international presence. Both Regular and Reserve Force chaplains will be called upon to support Canadian soldiers during upcoming deployments. The emphasis was clear, readiness is critical to ensure effective chaplain presence on the missions ahead.

Engaging in professional development, Major Vic Morris emphasized the importance of spiritual resiliency in his presentation on moral injury. He highlighted the role of chaplains in fostering hope, peace, restoration, and forgiveness to promote resilience within themselves and among CAF members.

Lt(N) Gleb Pistruga's presentation on his TF Poland deployment crafted a deeply moving and authentic human experience. His inspirational account fostered a profound emotional connection with the audience, transforming his narrative into an inspirational journey of shared humanity.

Finally, participants traveled to the Royal Military College and greeted by Officer Cadets (OCdts) who afforded a tour around campus. The students shared their aspirations for their military careers and how they believe chaplains are playing a critical role in the success of young OCdts.

The motto of the RCChS is “Called to Serve.” This Exercise was an excellent reminder of how multifaceted that motto is. Chaplains are being called to serve in readiness and resiliency, to serve OCdts who are shaping the future of the CAF and to serve soldiers deploying on missions around the globe.

Chaplains of the CAF are standing up to meet these callings proudly, now and into the future.
