Virtual Shout-Outs – Bulletin #40
July 2, 2024 - Defence Stories

Summer is finally here! Start off the season right by recognizing one of your colleagues with a Virtual Shout-Out!
"A culture of gratitude helps people realize how truly fortunate they are and instills a desire to pay that forward."
– Karl Sun
Do you know of a co-worker who deserves a special shout-out or are you looking for a way to recognize someone who has made an impact, big or small? Virtual Shout-Outs are a quick and easy way for you to publicly recognize a colleague, or team of colleagues, for a job well done.
Here’s how to submit a Virtual Shout-out:
- Email your shout-outs to the Corporate Awards and Recognition Secretariat, and
- Provide the email(s) of the person(s) being recognized.
- Shout-outs are collected on an ongoing basis.
Note that shout-out recipients will be given the option to “opt out” of having their message displayed on the Bulletin Board (accessible only on the National Defence network) on the Maple Leaf and the Defence Team intranet, and submissions can remain anonymous.
Don’t delay! Virtually shout-out your hard-working colleagues today!
Dr. Veronic Clair, Strengthening the Forces Section Head, and the Strengthening the Forces (STF) Health Promotion Program team would like to express their utmost appreciation to Pam Hatton, RD, Educator and Program Subject Matter Expert with STF, and Laurie Barker Jackman, RD, Educator and Health Promotion Delivery Specialist for their invaluable contributions towards the creation of a brand new course, The Essential Nutrition Course. This course presents the latest evidence-informed nutrition guidance in an engaging and easily digestible way with simple messages and captivating graphics to help CAF personnel improve their health and wellbeing. It is truly an amazing resource for healthy living that simplifies the art of eating well for life and recognizes the important role that food plays in nourishing both body and soul, while avoiding stigma by emphasizing a modern holistic health and wellness approach to nutrition, rather than an overemphasis on body weight. This course has truly been designed for everyone, no matter their nutrition goals.
Their enthusiasm and tireless efforts have been outstanding. The research and content creation work that both put in have been instrumental in shaping this brand-new course which recently launched in the health promotion delivery environment in April of 2024.
Pam Hatton has had a remarkable career as a Registered Dietician, with 20 years of uniformed service with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and subsequent transition to a civilian role with Strengthening the Forces in 2012. Her commitment to nutrition speaks volumes about the value she places on the health and well-being of the CAF. Pam has a special ability to simplify complex information and convey important knowledge in a manner that is easy to understand and fun.
Laurie Barker Jackman is a registered dietitian with over 20 years of experience developing nutrition programming, working in media, and helping people achieve their best health. She has a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Science in human nutrition from St. Francis Xavier University. During her work with Strengthening the Forces on The Essential Nutrition Course, she worked collaboratively with Pam Hatton to achieve extraordinary results with this new course.
Together, Pam and Laurie’s passion for supporting the health of our CAF is greatly appreciated by all. The impact of their contributions will be felt by many.

We would like to give a big shout out to the Conduct and Culture Data Management team within the Chief Professional Conduct and Culture’s (CPCC) Directorate Research and Quality Improvement (DRQI). The team’s dedication, expertise, and extensive collaboration with Strategic partners have been instrumental in developing and launching the Conduct and Culture Data Center (CCDC) within the Defence Team. The CCDC is a valuable resource that provides data-driven insights to facilitate informed decision-making. This achievement reflects the team’s unwavering commitment to advancing data management practices and enhancing our ability to leverage data for strategic initiatives. Please join me in extending our gratitude to the Data Management Team for their hard work, diligence, and outstanding contributions: Tyler Watt, Rehma Husain, Maj Steven Trainor, André Leclerc, and Martina Gordon. Their commitment to excellence has truly made a difference, and we are immensely grateful for their continued efforts.

I’d like to send a virtual shout out to Stephanie Crooks. She is new to government, and she plays a key role in providing corporate services support to the very busy DND/CAF ATIP office. From day one she has been a rockstar and has never shied away from a challenge. Stephanie is incredibly resourceful; she goes above and beyond to find solutions to problems and helps make business run smoothly. She is keen, organized and she genuinely cares about people. Stephanie is the definition of a team player, and she tries very hard to make our lives easier every day. From the entire DPMC team – I would like to say a huge thank-you for your amazing support!

I would like to send a huge thank you to Mario Laroche for jumping in to help us submit a sign language interpretation request on a super tight timeline. Mario never once questioned our circumstances or made us feel inadequate for the late request, instead he jumped into action and did his part getting the forms lined up and submitted without delay. His immediate action and proactive approach alleviated an immense amount of stress and worry for our team who were going through this request process for the first time. Thank you, Mario for your support and for helping us make our meeting accessible to all!

On behalf of CPCC’s Engagement and Strategic Partnerships team, I would like to give a shoutout to Sophie Gauvreau who hit the ground running this past January. Sophie has not skipped a beat since beginning her one-year term supporting the logistics of CPCC engagements. Our engagements have significantly benefitted from her attention to detail and proactive attitude. In a short amount of time, she has proven her commitment not only to the success of our engagements, but also to ensuring the mental health of the team remains a top priority. Merci Sophie!
– Kate Valentine (and the ESP team!)
I would like to give a shout out to Fred Malenfant. Fred is always ready and willing to help those around him, sharing his knowledge and expertise. He always does his job and then seeks out others who need help. His strong work ethic and sense of humour keep our shop rolling in these busy times. Keep up the good work and thanks for being you, Fred!

I would like to give a shout-out to Helene Donaldson who has joined the Defence Team in January 2023 as the Business Manager at Director General of Defence Security (DGDS), after more than twenty years at the National Gallery of Canada. Helene has quickly oriented to DND and built meaningful relationships inside and outside DGDS. Her professionalism, positive attitude and problem solving approach have significantly contributed to positive changes as the team navigates existing and emerging challenges. Her proactive leadership engagements on key issues, putting people first, have been key to our efforts to improve both the business and the workplace experience. We are thankful for the different perspectives she brings to the team and her eagerness to learn about DND and the CAF with a genuine interest to support and enable the team.
