Teeghan Branscombe
My name is Teeghan Branscombe. I grew up in Peterborough, Ont., and moved to Ottawa for university in the fall of 2020. I began my studies at the University of Ottawa in biopharmaceutical science and quickly realized that the program was not for me. I then transferred into the Telfer School of Management. I decided to specialize in human resource (HR) management, and later adding marketing as a dual major. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cooking and baking.
I was hired at the Department of National Defence (DND) through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) as a portfolio support officer in the Canadian Forces Support Group (Ottawa-Gatineau) (CFSG(O-G)). All the work I do closely reflects my field of study in HR, as my team works to support all the branches of CFSG(O-G). My tasks include supporting staffing actions, second language evaluation requests and translation requests.
I really enjoy working alongside the members of my team, as they have been extremely kind and helpful since I started! I have also enjoyed getting to know different clients from various branches and working with them.
When I first started at DND I was slightly overwhelmed with how big the campus is and how many people are working here, however, it did not take long for me to find my around and understand the role that I and my colleagues play in supporting the Defence Team.
While at DND, I have enjoyed the activities offered, including the pizza lunch and outdoor games to celebrate Public Service Week, as well as the CFSG(O-G) sports day. These events allowed me to meet other people from my formation in a fun, casual setting! I also recently had the privilege of witnessing a Change of Command Ceremony which was interesting and helped me gain more insight into military roles and procedures.
Another benefit of working at DND is the hybrid work model, which allows me to work in office where I get to collaborate with my team and get to know them in person, as well as from home. Although I am not bilingual yet, working at DND has motivated me to learn French so I have been actively practicing.
I have no doubt that the work I have been doing this summer and will continue to do this fall part-time when I return to school will help me gain knowledge and skills to be successful in my career with the public service once I graduate this December! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at DND and look forward to continuing my position within CFSG(O-G).
