From military to civilian life: New transition process and digital release system
October 16, 2024 - Defence Stories

Transitioning from military to civilian life can be challenging, but the Canadian Armed Forces Transition Group (CAF TG) is here to help with a new, streamlined process. Leveraging digital tools and comprehensive support services, this enhanced process ensures a smoother, more efficient transition for members preparing to move into civilian life. The new Transition Process is designed to be more personalized, taking into account the unique needs and circumstances of each member, while the Digital Release System simplifies and automates administrative tasks, making it easier for members to navigate their transition journey.
Renewing Training and Support Programs Across Transition Centers
In line with standardizing the Military to Civilian Transition (MCT) process across Transition Centers, CAF TG has also undertaken a renewal process for all transition-related training events, to include Second Career Assistance Network Seminars, Career Transition Workshops , and Long Term Planning Seminars that enable members to gain knowledge which will optimize their CAF careers while becoming aware of transition services and programs. This renewal is being led by the Directorate of Transition Services and Policy and signifies the transfer of these transition services from local Base and Wing Personnel Selection Officers towards Transition Units led transition events.
Empowering Military Transitions: Digital Tools and Guided Support for CAF Members
The new MCT process is supported by advanced digital tools, marking a new era of support for CAF members.
The stand-up of the Digital Transition Centre (DTC) empowers CAF members to understand, plan, and execute all their transition-related activities. This tool enables members to book virtual or in-person appointments with CAF and Veteran Affairs Canada (VAC) staff at their nearest TC. It also facilitates access to transition training and education, -registration for transition-focused events, and the translation of military skills, training, and experience into civilian equivalencies.
Members can also use the DTC to access My Transition Guide, a resource designed to help them prepare for their transition journey. Additionally, a guided support team is available to provide feedback or suggest changes to the releasing member's transition plan in near real-time.
Located within the DTC, the National Resource Directory is an openly accessible and interactive tool where members, Veterans, and their families can explore a variety of government and civilian organizations offering support for each domain of well-being.
Enhancing Transition Support: Launch of the eCAFRA Portal and Refined Release Process
Director General Compensation and Benefits is also marking a significant milestone with the launch of the electronic Canadian Armed Forces Release Administration (eCAFRA) portal that acts as a bridge between the DTC and the Canadian Armed Forces Release Administration (CAFRA) workflow application. At the DTC, members will find information about when and how these services and capabilities will be available to them and instructions to guide them through the changes to the refined release process.
In conclusion, the digitally transformed improvements in transition and release administration, -along with the introduction of the MCT process, reflect years of dedicated effort to ensure a seamless transition for CAF members while supporting retention - Collaborating closely with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS) the CAF has provided professional, standardized, and personalized transition assistance to members and their families. The implementation of the DTC and eCAFRA/CAFRA marks a significant step towards modernizing transition and release administration, enhancing operational efficiency, and paving the way for future innovations. CMP remains committed to excellence and ongoing digital transformation. For more information, contact Capt Z. Assari, CAF TG PAO: zahida.assari@forces.gc.ca
