The Next of Kin Travel Benefit (NKTB) helps cover travel and living expenses for the next of kin (NOK) of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members during critical times, such as serious injury or illness. Members must complete the DND 2587 form to list their NOK, ensuring contact details are accurate and updated.

The form lets members name people closest to them, including minors (add their year of birth). List names in priority order and sign, date, and submit the form in Guardian before any injury or incident. This ensures NOK can be there during critical moments, whether by your side or at your funeral.

Essential Legal Documents

CAF members should also complete these documents:

Travel and Duration

NKTB allows up to four NOK to travel for a total of 120 days. The member decides who can travel and for how long. If the member is unable, the POA or primary NOK decides.

Only those listed on the DND 2587 are eligible for reimbursement. If someone is added later, their benefit starts on the amendment date. The Chief of Defence Staff may approve an extra 180 days for one NOK if recommended by an MO or authorized civilian physician.

Entitlements and Limitations

NKTB applies in cases like serious injury (SI), very serious injury (VSI), mental health needs, surgery, or post-op care, as determined by an MO or authorized civilian physician.

Eligibility includes Regular and Reserve Force members on duty. Class A members must be “signed in,” and travel requires a route letter. Cadets and those off duty are not eligible.
