Modernizing the CAF Sports Program
In the coming months, members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) will see improvements to the CAF Sports Program. Led by Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS), this comprehensive modernization of the current sports program aligns with the CAF’s strategic priorities of enhancing personnel well-being by fostering social, mental, and physical wellness.
The update includes the introduction of a rotational model for national sports, as well as an inclusive approach to ensure a diverse range of activities is available to all members. It will also see a gradual phasing out of low-participation programs and a prioritization of those with greater impact and alignment with program goals [PDF-27.4MB]. These changes will enhance engagement, increase accessibility for new participants, and foster inclusivity across all skill levels.
To maximize the success and sustainability of the updated program, continued and formalized investments in essential resources such as coaches, officials, athletic trainers and sports staff will be provided to ensure a positive experience for participants. Traditional national sports will now occur biennially, while international sports will follow a three-year cycle, preparing them for the Military World Games.

The updated program aims to increase participation at the grassroots level, support equity, diversity and inclusion efforts and introduce new and emerging sports. By restructuring the national and international sports calendars and emphasizing community engagement, the modernization of the CAF Sports Program seeks to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members.
Diverse opportunities will be offered to address barriers to participation such as financial constraints and logistical challenges like daycare or shift work.
The CAF community will be kept informed throughout the transition year, with communication around opportunities, changes and timelines. For more information, visit the CFMWS website as updates become available over the next few months: Modernizing the CAF Sports Program.
