Message from the Clerk of the Privy Council
June 12, 2025 - Defence Stories

Colleagues,
Today the Prime Minister announced my retirement from the public service after thirty years, the last two as Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet. I want to take this moment to thank all of you for your service to this great country at a time when service has been so deeply needed. Canada is a precious place, embodying traditions and aspirations we have inherited, refined and evolved. As public servants, we have the specific responsibility of being custodians of an institution foundational to our democracy and essential to the well being of our fellow citizens.
I feel blessed to have been head of this institution for these two years. I am also grateful to former Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Carney for entrusting in me a role I have been honoured to play. I wish Michael Sabia the very best as he embarks on his tenure. Canada is lucky to be benefitting again from his wisdom and vigour.
You, as public servants, will continue your work on behalf of this country, which we love. And I, as a citizen, will admire your success.
John Hannaford (he/him)
Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet
