Whether you're attending an industry exhibition like CANSEC, a gala, or another external event hosted by third parties, participation as a member of the Defence Team is a valuable opportunity to engage with colleagues and stakeholders. However, there are important guidelines in place to ensure your participation aligns with ethical standards.

In accordance with DAOD 7021-1 and DAOD 7021-3, Department of National Defence (DND) and Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel must be mindful of what they accept when attending events, particularly when food, beverages, gifts, or entertainment are involved.

What’s the catch?

Events often include perks such as complimentary meals, prize draws, or exclusive receptions. While these offerings may seem routine, accepting benefits that exceed minimal value - meaning a value small enough not to influence the recipient - may require prior written approval.

What about prize draws or giveaways?

DND/CAF personnel are not permitted to participate in prize draws or giveaways if the value of the prize exceeds minimal value. This applies to raffles, promotional contests, and other similar activities hosted by vendors or sponsors.

Uniform wear at events

The responsible authorities listed above decide on uniform wear after considering the event type, the member’s role, and public perception of attendance, and whether attendance could be construed as endorsement. Additionally, uniform wear does not, on its own, alter an individual’s conflict of interest risk, which stems from their duties and relationships, not attire.
