The National Veterans’ Week Speakers Program (NVWSP) provides a platform for members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) past and present to share their experiences and insights, while promoting an understanding and awareness of the CAF and Canada’s veterans during Veterans’ Week (November 5-11).

The mission: what NVWSP achieves

As a program, we work with schools and community groups across the country who want to invite a CAF member to share their experiences. This provides Canadians with an invaluable opportunity to learn firsthand from CAF members, enriching their understanding of history and the lived experiences of military service.

We strive to offer meaningful and impactful content that resonates with our audiences and helps communities come together. While celebrating the courage and dedication of our CAF members, we encourage a deeper appreciation of the contributions made by those who have served and continue to serve today.

The planning: how NVWSP succeeds

The planning begins in the spring with the help of representatives from across the Department of National Defence. Over the summer months, hundreds of products are developed, such as the NVWSP video series, the social media calendar, and a variety of messages and articles like this one.

In August, 85 regional points of contacts join the team and are responsible for matching requests that the program receives with CAF members in their area. This is no easy feat!

The program’s success is made possible by its speakers; last year, more than 1,200 CAF members delivered nearly 2,100 presentations.

The validation: why NVWSP matters

Veterans’ Week is more than just a series of events; it is a time for reflection and gratitude. The NVWSP plays a critical role in ensuring that the stories and contributions of our veterans are not forgotten.

Also, because we know that the more people know about these stories, the greater the impact we can have in honouring our veterans who have defended our freedoms and way of life.

Are you intrigued yet?

Teachers and community group leaders can submit a request for a presentation by a CAF speaker or access to a variety of Remembrance day related videos for different audiences and ages through the NVWSP website. The number of requests that the NVWSP can accommodate is limited and registration for in-person presentations closes on October 20.

If you are a CAF member interested in being part of this year’s program, there is always a need for speakers from all regions, environments, and ranks to help fill as many requests as possible.
