October is Women’s History Month– a time to recognize the achievements of women and their lasting contributions to our history, institutions, and society. It’s an opportunity to reflect on progress toward gender equality and the ongoing work still ahead.

As Defence Co-Champions for Women, we are proud to celebrate the diverse roles of women across the Defence Team – military members and public servants alike. Whether serving in uniform or supporting operations through civilian expertise, women continue to shape the future of defence in Canada and around the world.

This year, we highlight the importance of building relationships that foster belonging, break down barriers, and create opportunities for collaboration and growth. Across roles, ranks, and lived experiences, these connections amongst women help strengthen our teams and drive a more inclusive future for all.

Throughout the Defence Team, women are leading in critical areas that safeguard Canadians every day. Their contributions and leadership in areas such as science, technology, operations, and emergency response demonstrate not only capability and courage, but also a commitment that inspires those who will follow in their footsteps.

Throughout our history – from the first military nurses who served in 1885 to today’s leaders in peacekeeping and combat operations – women have helped define Canada’s defence story. Their service and sacrifice paved the way for greater inclusion in both military and civilian service.

To all women across the Defence Team – thank you. Your leadership and dedication strengthen our mission and honour those who came before us.

Key dates to mark this month:

Together, we serve. Together, we lead. Together, we celebrate.
