Conflict is a natural part of any workplace but knowing how to address it effectively can make all the difference. If you’re ever unsure about what steps to take, who to turn to, or how to resolve an issue, support is available. October 16th marks International Conflict Resolution Day; a timely reminder that the Chief, Professional Conduct and Culture’s Conflict and Complaint Management Services (CCMS) is here to help members of the Defence Team and the (newly integrated) Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) navigate challenges and foster healthier work environments.

What is the Conflict and Complaint Management Services (CCMS)?

Whether you’re bringing forward a concern, responding to a complaint, or seeking guidance on how to address workplace conflict, CCMS will support you with submitting, tracking, and resolving complaints, while sharing resources about constructive approaches to conflict management.

The role of CCMS

CCMS provides direct support to Defence Team members in resolving workplace disputes. They also assist chains of command by offering insights into workplace dynamics and identifying potential systemic issues that may need attention.

Why conflict resolution matters

Learning how to manage conflict effectively is an essential skill. It strengthens teams, improves productivity, and creates a culture where members feel valued, respected, and engaged.

Opportunities to learn more

To help Defence Team members better understand the services available to them, CCMS offers “About CCMS” information sessions. These sessions provide an overview of CCMS resources, explain how the team can assist when workplace conflict arises, and outline the support available to both employees and leadership.

Additional learning resource

Members are also encouraged to watch the Navigating Difficult Conversations in Workplace Conflict Resolution video featuring two experts in the field that offer practical guidance on how to approach difficult conversations in today’s increasingly diverse workplace.

Accessible support across Canada

Local support is available through 16 CCMS offices located at Bases and Wings across the country. Each office is staffed with professionals who can guide Defence Team members and leaders through both formal and informal conflict resolution processes.

Opportunities for growth

Being well equipped to manage conflict when it arises is essential for maintaining a respectful, productive, and resilient workplace. By addressing issues early and constructively, we can prevent small concerns from escalating, strengthen working relationships, and ensure that every voice is heard. With the right tools and support, conflict can become an opportunity for growth, both for individuals and for the Defence Team as a whole.
