S1 Patrick Ward: volunteer firefighter and proud submariner

A native of Stellarton, Nova Scotian Sailor 1st Class Patrick Ward was driven by a deep desire to serve, initially contributing significantly as a volunteer firefighter in his community, before extending that commitment to his country.
“I was a volunteer firefighter in my hometown for close to seven or eight years, and I just felt like I could do more to serve my country. More than just my community itself, “says S1 Ward.
In 2019, S1 Ward joined the Royal Canadian Navy with the full support of his parents, Jim and Cindy Ward. “They understand the effort and passion I had for volunteer firefighting, and I believe they understood that I wanted to work in a similar environment on a larger scale,” says S1 Ward.
As he was helping with a personnel leadership course, while awaiting his technical training, he encountered a former submariner who sparked his interest in the Canadian Submarine Force. Earning his “dolphins”—the highly coveted submariner qualification badge—remains one of his proudest achievements. To this day, he wears his uniform, particularly with the dolphins affixed, with immense pride.
“Being a symbol for the Canadian Armed Forces, especially in a small unit like the submarines, is a large accomplishment. I am proud of my dolphins and if you really think about it, submarines are pretty cool,” says S1 Ward.
The Canadian Submarine Force was a perfect fit for him. His experience as a volunteer firefighter had cultivated a desire for close team collaboration, and he found that exact environment. For S1 Ward, the team working hand-in-hand to achieve the mission is a powerful driving force.
“The crew and the team are what is keeping me in. We are all here for the same goal and our value is recognized. Even at my level we are hard to replace. I joined at 26 but I wished I joined earlier,” says S1 Ward.
