January 28, 2026 - Defence Stories

CDS

Colleagues,

As he prepares to embark upon his retirement on January 29, we would like to recognize Mario Pelletier, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), for his leadership and long-standing service to Canadians.

With more than 40 years of service, Commissioner Pelletier has made a long and lasting contribution to Canada. As the first graduate of the CCG Academy to ascend to the role of Commissioner, Mario brought invaluable experience and leadership to the organization. He is known to many as a steady, committed and resilient leader, a mentor, and a mariner at heart.

He has led the CCG with clarity, purpose, and commitment.

Under his leadership, Commissioner Pelletier guided the foundational stages of the CCG’s transition into the Defence portfolio—work that has strengthened collaboration across our organizations, enhanced collective capabilities, and positioned us to contribute even more meaningfully to Canada’s security and resilience at home and abroad. He also advanced key priorities that will continue to shape a strong and modern CCG for years to come.

CCG Deputy Commissioner, Programs, Marc Mes—who will serve as Acting Commissioner on an interim basis—captured Commissioner Pelletier’s impact and legacy well:

We extend our sincere thanks to Commissioner Pelletier for his exceptional service and his dedication to Canadians. Please join us in wishing him all the very best in his retirement. Fair winds and following seas, Mario.
