Farewell message from Deputy Minister Stefanie Beck
January 23, 2026 - Defence Stories

Dear friends and colleagues, Defence Team,
After 36 years in government, five postings abroad and five government departments, I will be retiring today. I want to share just how grateful I am to all of you for what has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my life.
Serving the Defence Team – now including the Canadian Coast Guard – has been an honour, a privilege, and a remarkable experience. Throughout my time here, I have so admired the dedication and resilience that define the people of this organization. We are motivated by the best in each of us: service and integrity, professionalism and excellence. From the brilliance of our senior management team, to the steadfast support of my own office and the dedication and creativity of each and every one of you, I thank you for your outstanding work.
This is a historic moment for defence and security in Canada. Together, we have moved mountains in the past few months. We have strengthened our ability to detect and deter our adversaries, as well as defend our country. We have invested in new capabilities that are game changers for all of us. We have modernized how we support and respect our own people, and become even more agile in a rapidly evolving, uncertain world. This work has been difficult, and it is not finished, but the progress is real and enduring, and it matters.
The unique relationship between the military and civilian members of the Defence Team remains one of our greatest strengths. I would like to thank General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, for her partnership and shared leadership; Natasha Kim, Associate Deputy Minister, for her thoughtful and diligent insights; Caroline Xavier, Chief, Communications Security Establishment for her foresight and innovation; and Mario Pelletier, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard for his steady hand in guiding the Coast Guard into a welcoming port. I am grateful to Minister McGuinty for his vision, trust, and guidance, and his team for their warm collaboration and persistence. Together we have done what many said was impossible.
I know that incoming Deputy Minister Christiane Fox will be well supported by the skill, dedication, and commitment that define this extraordinary Defence Team. As you continue to excel, adapt to change, and support one another, you underscore the professionalism and resilience that make this organization so exceptional.
Canadians are in good hands with you.
Stefanie Beck
Deputy Minister of National Defence
