Space course linking theory to operations

As space becomes increasingly important to military operations, the need for personnel who can understand and apply space capabilities continues to grow. Last month, military and civilian personnel strengthened their knowledge of space operations during the Space Professionals Operations Course (SPOC), which included a visit to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

Delivered by Royal Canadian Air Force Barker College, the nine-day course prepares personnel for employment in space-related positions in Canada and abroad. As a follow-up to the Basic Space Operations Course (BSOC), it allows participants to connect technical knowledge with operational requirements while developing an understanding of how space capabilities support Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operations.

Space-based systems support communications, navigation, intelligence gathering, weather monitoring, and command and control activities across the CAF. The SPOC helps participants understand how these capabilities contribute to operational success. Candidates build skills in coordinating space-related activities, applying technical knowledge to operational challenges, and supporting leadership decision-making. The course also provided opportunities to learn from experienced leaders and practitioners working in the space domain.

Senior leaders from 3 Canadian Space Division (3 CSD) and 7 Wing (Space), including the 3 CSD Command Team, Brigadier-General Horner and Chief Warrant Officer Marshall, as well as the Commanding Officer of 7 Wing (Space), Colonel Lafrenière, shared their experiences with candidates throughout the course. Their insights helped connect classroom learning to current operations and highlighted the growing importance of space capabilities within the CAF.

A highlight of the course was a visit to the Canadian Space Agency. Participants learned how space systems are managed, observed collaboration across the Canadian space sector, and gained a better understanding of how innovation supports operational outcomes. During the visit, candidates met Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques, who shared lessons from his career and emphasized the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and communication.

Personnel interested in pursuing the SPOC are encouraged to complete the Basic Space Operations Course (BSOC) and Basic Electronic Warfare (BEW), which are prerequisites for the course. The SPOC is offered four times annually, with a winter course in Winnipeg and spring and fall courses in Ottawa. Upon completion of the BSOC, eligible personnel can pursue the SPOC to further develop the practical and operational knowledge required to support space-related activities within the Department of National Defence and the CAF.
