The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Pipes and Drums, based in Ottawa, took part in several events during the Virginia International Tattoo in Norfolk, Virginia — home of NATO’s Supreme Allied Command Transformation.
Met with thunderous applause and enthusiastic crowds, the band performed in a variety of settings: from school outreach concerts, to leading the Canadian contingent in the Norfolk NATO Festival Parade of Nations, to playing key roles in the Tattoo itself. Their presence was well received by audiences and fellow performers alike.
Warrant Officer Joshua McFarlane, Pipe Major of the RCAF Pipes and Drums, highlighted the significance of the event:
“We’re very happy to be here representing Canada on an international stage, partnering with our NATO allies, and being part of a festival that brings in performers from around the world. It’s a pleasure to contribute to a celebration that unites us through music, dance, and shared passion.”

The Virginia International Tattoo — featuring military music and drill displays — was the central event of the week-long festivities. It included four public performances and two student matinees between April 23 and 27, drawing over 30,000 spectators.
Lieutenant-Colonel Antonio Stabile, Canada’s National Liaison Representative to NATO Supreme Allied Command Transformation, praised the group’s contributions.
“The RCAF Pipes and Drums performed excellently. Their integration into the massed band and individual features were outstanding, representing Canada and the RCAF with distinction.” He added, “marching ahead of the Canadian float in the Parade of Nations was a proud moment for both military personnel and the Canadian community in attendance.

Their participation was deeply appreciated, and we encourage future involvement from the many outstanding CAF bands.”
This year, the RCAF Pipes and Drums joined 137 other musicians in the massed pipes and drums, performing two featured sets, a finale with all participants, and a crowd-pleasing medley from Pirates of the Caribbean.
The RCAF Pipes and Drums includes three full-time military musicians, supported by a roster of civilian and military volunteers. This marked the first appearance of a Canadian military band at the Tattoo since 2019.
