What started as a way to help his kids cope with his deployments and sails, quickly turned into a family full of Petty Officers, 1st Class.
PO 1 Brandon Huber’s family has become a pretty unique crew, united by a shared dedication to naval service.
Not only is Brandon himself a PO 1, but his sons, Patrick and Mathias, have also climbed to the rank of Petty Officers, 1st Class within the Sea Cadets (Lanark Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps), and the Navy League (Carlplace Navy League Cadet Corps), respectively. And even though she isn’t a CAF member herself, mother Kathryn Huber is an active member of the Naval League board, fundraising and hosting events such as high tea for Mother’s Day. It truly is all-hands-on-deck in the Huber home.
PO 1 Brandon Huber makes sure he isn’t missing out on the fun of volunteering either. When off duty, he spends time with the Navy League and Sea Cadets programs, teaching seamanship to the kids.

"I'll teach knots and other rope work. I show the kids how to use the bos'n call. (Yes, it's loud and a long night)! I also talk a lot about my times at sea, what we do on trips, and how life is onboard."
His own boys are also thriving in their respective programs. After taking a Fitness and Sports Instructor Course program at summer camp, Patrick began running the sporting events and fitness testing for the group. Because of this, he received the Sportsman Award from LANARK RCSCC. Mathais also won the Navy League Seamanship Award from Carlplace NLCC.
A special moment for Brandon and Katherine is Remembrance Day. "We still go out on the 11th of November, but we pay respects while watching our kids march to the cenotaph with the veterans."
As for sharing the rank, PO 1 Brandon Huber say, "I'd like to think it brought us closer to have that common connection of PO 1 together... Patrick was looking forward to outranking me before applying to the Army reserves. Matthais, I'm sure he'd like to try and boss me around a bit."
"It's great working with my kids in both programs. Watching them grow and be involved in something related to my career, it gives a wonderful sense of pride!"
