Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan today issued the following statement at the conclusion of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Change of Command ceremony at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado:

“I was honoured to represent the Government of Canada at today’s Change of Command ceremony, where I took the opportunity to underscore Canada’s commitment to NORAD and the importance we place on the Canada-U.S. defence relationship.

“I want to congratulate General Lori J. Robinson as she takes over as Commander of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). With more than 30 years in the United States Air Force, General Robinson brings a depth of experience that will serve the continent very well.  Under her leadership, the friendship and cooperation our militaries have cultivated over the years will be sustained.

“I also want to take the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation and thanks to outgoing NORAD Commander Admiral Bill Gortney for his leadership and service to Canada and the U.S. during his tenure. Both our countries are safer because of his hard work. I wish him well in his retirement.

“NORAD is an example of how two countries can to work together for mutual benefit. Canada will continue to work alongside our US partners to monitor and defend North American airspace and watch our maritime approaches.”
