Soldiers Train to Fight and Survive in the Arctic

News Release

March 16, 2017 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Approximately 180 Canadian Army soldiers, mostly from the Reserve Force (31 Canadian Brigade Group) in Ontario, are deploying to Canada’s Arctic for Northern Exercise (NOREX) 2017. NOREX 2017 will take place in and around Resolute Bay, Nunavut, from March 17 to 28, 2017.

This challenging northern exercise is designed to test the mobility, sustainability, survivability of 4th Canadian Division soldiers, and is aimed at maintaining an Arctic response capability of 4th Canadian Division’s Arctic Response Company Group.

During the exercise, the deploying soldiers will be joined by members of the Canadian Rangers. The Rangers provide patrols and detachments for national security and public safety missions in sparsely settled northern, coastal, and isolated areas of Canada that cannot efficiently be covered by other units of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Quotes

“Training the soldiers of 4th Canadian Division in the frigid conditions above the 75th Parallel provides the Canadian Armed Forces unique opportunities. Such training opportunities enhance the military’s ability to defend Canada’s northern border and ensures the capacity to respond wherever and whenever the Government of Canada requires soldiers during domestic operations.”

-Brigadier-General S.M. Cadden, Commander, 4th Canadian Division

“NOREX 2017 is an important training opportunity for the members of the Arctic Response Company Group as it allows them to put their cumulative training and personal resolve to the test in some of the harshest conditions that Canada has to offer.“

-Lieutenant-Colonel P. Rittershofer, Commanding Officer, The Grey and Simcoe Foresters / Arctic Response Company Group
