Soldiers Train to Fight and Survive in the Arctic

March 16, 2017 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
Approximately 180 Canadian Army soldiers, mostly from the Reserve Force (31 Canadian Brigade Group) in Ontario, are deploying to Canada’s Arctic for Northern Exercise (NOREX) 2017. NOREX 2017 will take place in and around Resolute Bay, Nunavut, from March 17 to 28, 2017.
This challenging northern exercise is designed to test the mobility, sustainability, survivability of 4th Canadian Division soldiers, and is aimed at maintaining an Arctic response capability of 4th Canadian Division’s Arctic Response Company Group.
During the exercise, the deploying soldiers will be joined by members of the Canadian Rangers. The Rangers provide patrols and detachments for national security and public safety missions in sparsely settled northern, coastal, and isolated areas of Canada that cannot efficiently be covered by other units of the Canadian Armed Forces.

31 Canadian Brigade Group is part of 4th Canadian Division, which is responsible for all Canadian Army Regular and Reserve Force elements in Ontario, with the exception of a portion of northwestern Ontario, that falls under 3rd Canadian Division (Edmonton).

The Canadian Rangers protect Canada's sovereignty by reporting unusual activities or sightings, collecting local data of significance to the CAF, and conducting surveillance or sovereignty patrols as required.
