March 21, 2017 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Vice-Admiral Ron Lloyd, Acting Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff, issued the following statement:

“This year as we celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, it’s an opportunity to reflect on how far our nation has come in building an open and equal society, one in which all Canadians should be treated fairly, with respect and dignity.

“Today the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces join with Canadians across the country and nations around the world, to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

“We on the Defence Team have an obligation, and an opportunity, to work towards ensuring that our workplace stands up as a model to the rest of the nation. Sailors, soldiers, aviators, and civilian employees come from all corners of this country and from a multitude of different backgrounds, cultures, ethnic groups, and religions. We have all pledged to work together to uphold Canadian values and to serve Canada. To do this we must honour human rights, and fight racism and intolerance wherever we see it – here in our own backyard, and around the world.

“As the Defence Champion for Visible Minorities, I encourage all members of the Defence Team to engage in discussions surrounding this important day, and to renew our commitment to combating all forms of racial discrimination. Diversity in the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces is about defending, respecting and leveraging the unique differences, backgrounds, talents, and cultural perspectives amongst members of the Team. It is also about enabling an inclusive working environment where everyone can contribute to their full potential.

“We are proud to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, proud to serve our nation, and proud in our diversity. Our diversity is our strength, and through it we will remain a strong, innovative and forward-looking organization.”
