Statement from the Minister of National Defence on Earth Day
Statements
April 22, 2017 - Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
“Earth Day, established in 1970, is the perfect occasion to mark progress made by the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces in the worldwide movement to stop global warming and protect our planet.
“One way the Government of Canada demonstrates its commitment to the environment is by setting a government-wide target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent (below 2005 levels) by 2030. I am proud that the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces play a leadership role in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to the use of cleaner energy.
“DND has undertaken concrete steps to achieve these goals. On bases and wings across the country, DND is actively identifying energy savings measures and making improvements in efficiency. This initiative will provide an estimated annual savings of up to $16 million dollars and an estimated greenhouse gas reduction of up to 40 kilotons – no small feat. Energy initiatives allow us to support the creation of jobs by investing in clean technology, and promoting innovation in natural resource sectors. DND will continue to explore and pursue these opportunities wherever possible.
“We have also purchased alternative-fuel and electric vehicles, and we design our new buildings to be energy efficient and sustainable. In 2015/16 alone, twelve DND buildings achieved an industry-recognized level of high-environmental performance Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
“Beyond reducing our footprint and focusing on green infrastructure, DND manages a National Wildlife Area at Canadian Forces Base Suffield. This arrangement represents DND’s diligent stewardship in protecting a significant wildlife habitat area on Federal Lands in Canada.
“Environmental protection requires a whole-of-government commitment, and we are doing our part by undertaking innovative approaches to this in every aspect of our business. Collective leadership is crucial, and action critical if we are to achieve sustainability and leave a healthy environment for our children and grandchildren.”
