Joint statement on the occasion of the visit of the Australian Chief of Army to the Canadian Army
Statements
June 20, 2017 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
Lieutenant-General Paul Wynnyk, Commander Canadian Army, and Lieutenant-General Angus Campbell, Chief of the Australian Army, issued the following statement:
“We are extremely pleased to be able to strengthen the already close and highly productive ties between our two countries. This relationship has developed over a long history and is founded on a shared set of values and experiences. The opportunity to further develop this relationship and improve interoperability between our two armies is important to both our great nations.
“Our militaries have many similarities, including comparable size and structure, which have made Canada and Australia close defence partners in combined exercises, training, and operations such as the NATO-led Afghanistan mission.
“In an effort to enhance our ties, our Armies continuously seek to expand cooperation on initiatives like the American, British, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand Armies’ Program, and continue to participate in exchanges to increase our interoperability when on combined operations.
“Our two nations also share a strong respect for our past and the generations of soldiers who came before us. We know it is through understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced by generations past, that we will be stronger and more adaptable in the future. To honour our past, a wreath was laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial earlier today.
“This visit has afforded both our armies the opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and will help determine where we will take our alliance in the future. We look forward to enhancing the dynamic and growing bilateral defence relationship between Canada and Australia.”
