Canadian Army to conduct a Joint International Counter Explosive Threat Exercise

The Canadian Armed Forces will conduct a counter explosive threat exercise involving international military participants and Canadian law enforcement agencies at Canadian Forces Base Borden and 4th Canadian Division Training Centre Meaford from October 16 to November 3, 2017.
Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER 2017 provides an opportunity for explosive ordnance disposal and improvised explosive device teams to run through scenarios that enable them to practice neutralizing and safely disposing of explosive devices and countering the threat networks that employ them. The training environment will hone their skills and strengthen interoperability between Allies, partner nations, Global Affairs Canada and Canadian law enforcement agencies.
The theme of this year’s annual exercise is Countering the explosive threat in Peace Support Operations and the scenarios will highlight the complex nature of threats in such missions and the critical need for common training amongst international militaries, civilian agencies and law enforcement officers.
Explosive threats continue to be an evolving reality on operations at home and abroad. Strong, Secure, Engaged, Canada’s defence policy will modernize Joint Counter Explosive Threat capabilities to protect Canadian Armed Forces members within the new security environment to ensure Canadian Armed Forces readiness and mission success.

More than 200 Canadian Armed Forces members will participate in Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER 2017.

Participating nations include: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Denmark, India, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States, totaling more than 65 international troops and law enforcement specialists. There are also participants from the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Approximately 20 law enforcement officers from the Ontario Provincial Police, the Peel Regional Police, the York Police, the Sûreté du Québec and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will be taking part in the training.

Responsible for the planning and coordination of Exercise ARDENT DEFENDER 2017, the Canadian Army’s Joint Counter Explosive Threat Task Force is the authority for enabling and synchronizing actions to counter explosive threats on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces.
