Long-term support services for the Royal Canadian Navy
July 25, 2019 – Ottawa (Ontario) – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
As stated in Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, the Government is making new investments to ensure Canada’s Navy is capable of meeting the anticipated defence and security challenges of the coming decades.
On behalf of Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan, Karen McCrimmon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced the award of a service contract to BMT Canada Ltd. as part of this commitment. Under this contract, BMT Canada Ltd. will provide engineering, logistics, management, and support services to the Royal Canadian Navy’s fleet for an initial value of $77.8 million for five years. It will support up to 263 jobs for its duration.
The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) must continually adapt to emerging threats in order to accomplish its missions. This service contract will assist the RCN in meeting this mandate. BMT Canada Ltd. is contracted to provide a wide variety of work such as standards development and logistics services for equipment sustainment.
This contract is one of the first to have been awarded through an improved contract approval process, resulting in accelerated implementation. It will pave the way for other contracts to go through this new streamlined process and, as a result, improve how we acquire services for the Canadian Armed Forces.
“Our defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, promised an agile, multi-purpose Navy, and we are delivering on this commitment. This support contract increases our flexibility to provide essential services to our Royal Canadian Navy fleet, increasing its flexibility to fulfill its missions and deploy on short notice.”
The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence
“This defence contract will sustain employment in Ottawa and on both coasts for up to 15 years. It’s great news for the Canadian maritime sector and multiple local communities that will benefit from this long-term investment.”
Karen McCrimmon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
“This is an important contract that will support the work of the Royal Canadian Navy by ensuring that the women and men in uniform continue to operate reliable vessels. It will also sustain more than 260 jobs across Canada for years to come.”
Steve MacKinnon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Accessibility
This contract will support the RCN’s current and future fleet in instances where DND does not have the capacity to perform all of this work in-house.
These services will be provided to the Royal Canadian Navy on an as-required basis and will complement services already provided in-house.
Under this contract, services may include project management, policy and standards development, engineering and logistics services for the design, acquisition and sustainment of marine vessels and equipment.
The contract was competitively awarded to BMT Canada Ltd. for an initial period of five years, with two five year option renewals.
